William Shepherd’s Winged Freedom: First Place in Acrylics

Are you a Veteran with artistic talent? Do you know a Veteran who is a poet, writer, or performer? The Robert J. Dole VA is actively seeking entries for its 3rd annual Veterans Art Show, in the divisions of art, creative writing, music, dance, and drama.

The 2021 art show will take place August 19-20 and participants must be enrolled with Dole VA and must have an appointment to register and drop off work.

The deadlines for entries are July 26 for the music, dance, and drama divisions, and August 2 for creative writing and art. Veterans may submit up to three entries per division, plus one additional piece that addresses their experience during the pandemic for a total of four entries per division. Division rules and registration forms are available online at wichita.va.gov.

“We had a stellar show in 2020 and hope to continue the momentum,” said Recreational Therapist Christina Vasquez, an organizer of the event. “The primary goal of our annual art show is to provide a safe, sacred space to honor our Veterans’ narratives expressed through the creative arts.”

First-place entries in each category will advance to the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. However, Veterans can enter their work just for show. To be eligible for competition, entries must have been created after March 2020.

For more information, Veterans can call the Dole VA at 316-685-2221, ext. 57937 or ext. 54658. Email addresses for representatives are also available on the website.
