In honor of Juneteenth, a new film – “Miss Juneteenth,” starring Nicole Beharie as Turquoise Jones, was released with great reviews.

It’s a story about Jones, a once-pageant-queen-now-single-mom who holds down a household, a rebellious teenager, and pretty much everything that goes down at her job.

Jones once held the title for Miss Juneteenth. Life didn’t turn out as beautifully as the title promised, but Jones, determined to right her wrongs, is cultivating her daughter Kai to become Miss Juneteenth, even if Kai wants something else.

A rare feature film written and directed by a Black woman (Channing Godfrey Peoples), telling a Black woman’s story, “Miss Juneteenth” breaks stereotypes typically associated with Black women, and instead presents Black women who are attempting to liberate themselves and move toward a greater self-awareness.

So far, the film is getting great reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gives this film a 99% fresh rating. The film is also a competitor in the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Dramatic Film category.

The movie is available for streaming through a number of providers including Cox and DirecTV, along with Prime and Apple TV. The price for streaming varies from $6.99 to $8.99.
