Amanda Edwards, 37, Houston city councilwoman launched her bid back in July to run for U.S. Senate against the GOP’s three-times elected, John Cornyn.

If elected, Edwards would be Texas’ first black senator, a historic feat. She joins the field with 11 other democratics vying to relieve the senior senator, Cornyn, of his position. The democratic primary will be held Mar. 3, 2020.

In an interview with theGrio, the Houston native revealed why now is the perfect time to run, “I’m running to be the next U.S. senator because I believe that the time has come and gone for people just to be about politics and making promises on those campaign trails and under-delivering,” said Edwards.

Edwards’ campaign is focused on affordable healthcare. Her family has a history of battling cancer, so she understands the plight of common people to have insurance that is dependable and beneficial.

It’s a tough road ahead for this Harvard graduate, but she’s certain that with the help of Houston voters, anything is possible; Edwards has even found support from Beyonce’s mom Tina Knowles-Lawson.

“I was so grateful for Tina Knowles-Lawson and her support. She got behind me; she really connected with my story, and believes and has seen it. I mean, we’ve seen it through the legacy of her children in that anything is possible.”

Beto O’Rourke was the last democrat to even come close to taking a Senators chair against Ted Cruz; he lost by 220,00 votes – it was the closest race since 1988.
