Do you remember these guys? If you do, then you’ll be pleased to hear The Group of Guys are coming together for a reunion concert on Sun., June 12, 5 p.m. at Tabernacle Bible Church, 1817 N. Volutsia, Wichita.
The Group of Guys formed in Wichita in the late 80s and were regular fixtures on Gospel Music Programs through the late 90s. The original members, Michael Webber, Bernard Gray and Keith Marin were part of the Ambassadors for Christ singing group. When the group relocated to Atlanta, GA, the three stayed in Wichita and continued to get together and sing in Gray’s basement. That was, until Bernard agreed to sing on a program at St. Matthew CME Church.
Instead of arriving alone, he brought Martin and Webber with him. When the program MC asked what name he should use to announce the group, Bernard replied, “call us a group of guys, until we get a name.” The name stuck and after that program, they found themselves singing every Sunday. They were entertainment for hair shows, sang concerts at Big 8 Colleges, and traveled as far as Atlanta, GA. They also toured with the David Library’s winning play, “Methuselah’s Children” and often opened for well-known Gospel artists.
Being compared to the Winans, Commissioned and Take Six was flattering says Gray, “but that still didn’t capture the essence of A Group of Guys.”
Through the years, other members of the group included Thomas Hines, Roy Hines, and Stephan Dailey. Avery Richardson, who played bass for the group was from Chicago, IL. Martin, a Wichita native, currently resides in Macau, China.
