Even though a recent poll from CNN and the Kaiser Family Foundation finds that only four out of 10 Whites agree racism remains a serious problem in the United States, Tim Wise isn’t one of them. Wise, an anti-racist activist, essayist and author, works to dismantle, or at least bring awareness to, the issues of White privilege and racism. Since 1995, he has given speeches in all 50 states and on more than 800 college and high school campuses and to community groups across the nation. This month, he’s bringing his message to Wichita and the Wichita State University campus.
As part of their Black History Month Programming, Wise will speak on the topic Black Lives Matter vs All Lives Matter and White Privilege. His presentation is expected to draw a large crowd to the Hughes Metroplex on Wed., Feb. 17. The doors open at 5:45 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free for WSU students, faculty, and staff, but there is a $5 charge for the public.
Wise is the author of seven books, including his latest, “Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America.” Other books include, “Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority” and his highly acclaimed memoir, “White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son.”
Tickets are available in advance at the WSU Bookstore and Office of Diversity and Inclusion both located in the Rhatigan Student Center.
