black nurses

The Wichita Black Nurses Association (WBNA) have partnered with four locations in Wichita for their August mobile Covid-19 vaccine clinics. So far the WBNA has vaccinated more than two thousand African Americans in the Wichita area with hopes of reaching more minorities.

Currently, the state estimates that Black Kansans receive the COVID-19 vaccination at a rate slightly less than half that of White Kansans.

“We hope that bringing the vaccine to churches in the community will make people more comfortable with getting the vaccine, especially the elderly because they’re the ones having the hardest time getting access to them,” said Margaret Thompson, lead for WBNA’s vaccination team.

Participants age 18 and older can choose between the Pzier or Johnson and Johnson vaccines, while those aged 12-17 must receive the Pzier vaccine and be accompanied by an adult.

Here are the vaccination dates and times. To reserve a time, contact the locations or call Magaret Thompson (316) 655-6967. All second shots are at the same location.

Thompson, a nurse, began the WBNA vaccination program after receiving the vaccine herself and not seeing any other minorities receiving the shot.

“ I asked one of the nurses, who was White, how many Black people do you see coming to get these shots. And she said, ‘Hey, I've been here for 4 hours so far today and haven’t seen a Black person or Brown person.’ I then decided to talk with my group and said, we need to get out there and do some vaccines,” said Thompson.

Select individuals who get their first or second shot on Aug 7 will receive a $25 gift card on behalf of the WBNA.
