Dr. Valdenia Winn, was recently selected as the Assistant Democratic leader for the 2023-25 Kansas Legislative sessions.  In this position, Winn will help guide House Democrats in creating a cohesive policy plan to address the needs of all Kansans.  Winn previously held an Assistant leader role in the 2019-20 biennium. Dr. Winn is a graduate of Washington High School, and has earned three degrees including a PhD from the University of Kansas.  In addition to serving in the Kansas Legislature representing Wyandotte County, Winn serves on the USD 500, Kansas City KS School board.

  

Daryel Garrison, retired P.E. Teacher at Claude Huyck Elementary, has been selected as a 2023 inductee into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame for the he spent on the Missouri State University’s Men’s Basketball team in Springfield, MO from 1971 1975. Garrison is one of just four players in Missouri State history to have his jersey retired, Garrison was a four-year starter for the Bears, earning first-team All-MIAA honors three times.  Garrison helped lead the Bears to a pair of MIAA championships (1973, 1974), with both teams advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The 1974 squad reached the national finals, where they lost to Morgan State in Evansville, Ind. For his career, Garrison averaged 18.5 points per game. Garrison still holds the record as the all-time leading scorer nearly 50 years after graduating, with a total of 1,975 points at the school. In 1986, Garrison was inducted into the Missouri State University Hall of Fame.  

Garrison worked for the KCKPS for 26 years and oversaw the KidZone program at the District Office prior to his role as a P.E. teacher at Claude Huyck.
