Wyandotte residents enjoyed their first-ever 913 outdoor festival with nearly two dozen vendors, live music, performances, and children activities.
Mayor Tyrone Garner attended and announced Mayven Capote, a senior at Piper High School, as the winner of the 913 Day t-shirt design. As the winner, she received a $250 check.
Cynthia Fails, author and Founder of Launch Crate Publishing, said the energy at the festival was fantastic. “We couldn’t have asked for a better crowd to come show up and celebrate everything that’s happening in 913,” she said.
Individuals had options to cool down with shaved ice snow cones or Nelson’s Flavorade, which is freshly squeezed lemonade with over a dozen flavoring options. A few other vendors also selling food or treats were Holy Smoke BBQ and Akeem’s Sweet World.
Sheyvette Dickens, 913 planning chair, said she really enjoyed celebrating with Wyandotte people who came out to learn more about what’s going on in their community, to eat new foods, try new drinks or buy merchandise.
“We {Wyandotte] can do anything we want to and we’re going to grow from here,” said Dickens. “I also love that the community can get together and support each other in a positive way.”
This area code holiday, established in 2020, was started by Earnest Jackson, Samuel Lockridge, and Kendon McClaine.
