Akon signing Akon City deal

Africa is often the point of resolution for singer Akon’s philanthropic endeavors. Last year he brought light to Africa; illuminating the fact that in this age – over 600 million people still don’t have access to working electricity. With help from his partners Thione Niang and Samba Bathily, their venture ‘Akon Lighting Africa,’ has used solar energy to fuel 14 nations across Africa – Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Benin and Sierra Leone are among the line-up. The trio is also responsible for ‘Akon Lighting America.’

Akon, 45, native to Senegal is known better for his entrepreneurial work these days. Aside from lighting the world, he is working on a cryptocurrency called the Akoin – which he says will be the foundation for his newest endeavor – building a new city, which will run entirely on renewable solar energy.

In an Instagram post, Akon shared a photo when the deal was finalized on Monday. “Just finalized the agreement for AKON CITY in Senegal. Looking forward to hosting you there in the future,” the Senegal native posted.

Akon City, A.K.A. – Crypto City will be operational within the decade, but the Akoin will begin function by June 2020.

Talk of the futuristic city began in 2018, after the President of Senegal, Macky Sall, entrusted the musician with 2,000 acres of land located near the country’s newest international airport. Akon used his platform on the panel for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2018 to announce his plan.

Many are likening the city to a real-life Wakanda.

Late last Nov., he sat down with Nick Cannon, another multi-faceted artist, and gave details about the city. Construction is already underway and stage two for development will start in 2025.

In the interview, Akon expressed disagreement with many billionaires who sit on their assets while many people in America and abroad live below poverty.

“If you can have a billion dollars sitting in the bank, while you have all these people suffering and struggling, it’s crazy to me. It’s like a waste of a billion dollars,” Akon said.

The Akoin holds critical function in the establishment of Akon City; it is set to be the city’s central mode of money exchange. Akoin will usher in a new era of transparency in African government and the use of their citizens money; allowing for more independence and entrepreneurship. According to Transparency International – Sub-Saharan governments have a strong history for corruption.

"I think that blockchain and crypto could be the savior for Africa in many ways because it brings the power back to the people... Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology offer a more secure currency that enables people in Africa to advance themselves independent of the government," Akon said while presenting at the Cannes festival in France.
